The Istrian peninsula is crammed with picturesque walled old villages on the seashore but few are as attractive as Novigrad. The center of the old town lies on a limestone peninsula that has been once an island. Medieval walls topped with renewed crenellated towers run over the port and also the ancient center is replete with fifteenth to 18th-century homes and palaces. A sightseeing highlight of Novigrad is the baroque Rigo Palace with a exquisitly sculpted facade. The top of the island is devoted to a park shaded with parasol pines and there’s a lungomare – seaside promenade – that runs along the coast to the Novigrad marina, probably the most sheltered in the Adriatic sea.
